Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

Do you enjoy the summer season? Green grass, lively outdoor activities, everyone, and everything seem full of energy after a rough winter. While we all love summer, some of those days can get pretty brutal from a heat perspective.

You want to make sure your air conditioners are in fine working order because if things go awry you could find your home feeling like the inside of a microwave. Routine air conditioner maintenance is easy enough, but there’s a common question many owners have: “Why is my air conditioner leaking water?”

If you happen to be one of the people asking that question then you’ve come to the right place. Today United Water Restoration Group of San Antonio would like to take this time to talk about some of the possible reasons why your air conditioner is leaking water, and what you can do about it.

Why Is Your Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

Before we continue, it’s important to note that all active air conditioners will have some form of condensation associated with them on a hot day. When it’s a hotter day, then you can expect more condensation around your air conditioner.

It’s a reason to believe that your air conditioner is leaking water. Condensation only becomes a problem when you find that the air conditioner is leaking water more than it should. Here are a few of the common causes of excess air conditioner water leaking:

  • Dirty Filtration

Your air conditioner’s filter can become full enough that it can cause your evaporator coils to freeze as time passes. As a result, more water flows to the drainage pan, and can even cause overflows in some situations.

  • Clogged Drain

An air conditioner’s normal operations include water drainage. If the drain becomes clogged, the water will have nowhere to go and back up until you have a watery mess on your hands.

  • Low Freon

Low levels of freon in your air conditioner can be the root of a lot of problems in general, and failure to replace it to proper levels can lead to coil freezing, which of course will lead to a lot of unneeded water when it thaws and overflows the drain pan.
